Earlier this year, Stella McCartney in partnership with adidas released proof-of-concept garments with the intention of mass production as soon as technology allows.
The first is the Infinite Hoodie made from 60% NuCycl™ — a fully recyclable material developed by Seattle-based Evrnu — and 40% organic cotton, making the Infinite Hoodie the first of its kind that is 100% recyclable.
The second is the Biofabric Tennis Dress made from Microsilk™ — a biodegradable textile inspired by spider’s silk developed by Bolt Threads — another first-of-its-kind created with professional athletes and the general public in mind.
In their press release, Vice President of Strategy Creation at adidas James Carnes had this to say:
“We don’t have all the answers and we know we can’t do it alone. By collaborating with partners who share our same vision, as we’ve done with Evrnu and Bolt Threads, we can combine adidas’ sports industry expertise with specialist knowledge to bring about a waste-free world.”
And Stella McCartney:
“By creating a truly open approach to solving the problem of textile waste, we can help empower the industry at large to bring more sustainable practices into reality.”
The announcement coincided with the launch of the co-branded autumn/winter ’19 collection, pointing to a vision of the future in which fashion represents both a commitment to and an execution of innovative and sustainable practices that encourage growth in consumption as well as an increase in stewardship that benefits everyone throughout the global fashion supply chain.
